This is a short guide for creating the effect of old photos (for example, in a newspaper) without them looking odd and out of place. To begin, you'll need the following: 1. Old paper/parchment texture 2. Greyscale or black and white photo to print. Color photos can obviously be converted here. The Easy Way
Just set your layer blend mode to multiply. The Hard WayThis is another way to do it. It gives you slightly more options, and could be useful if you want to print images in ink of an unusual color. Start with your paper in the bottom layer. Create a new empty layer on top of it. This layer will contain the 'ink', so fill it with the ink color of your choice. Black, dark brown, etc. Add a full black layer mask to the ink layer. In photoshop this can be done from the Layers menu, but this can also be done in GIMP and some other programs. Create another layer, paste your photo into it, and position it as desired. Fill the rest of the layer with white. Hit Ctrl + I to invert the colors, then copy the entire layer to your clipboard. Alt click on the layer mask in your ink layer, and paste. Alt + Click the layer mask again to exit from it, and delete the no longer needed layer containing the image. Here is my result in red ink: Hopefully people will find this useful.
