I decided to pull out Yang Shenzu (the demolitions companion) and Enid Darkforge (the medic companion), to test how they worked together. The answer seems to be "Better than anticipated", if only because Enid and James can triage Yang when he blows himself up, or lights us all on fire.
He blows himself up a lot, particularly if it looks like he can hit 3 opponents with one grenade. This has resulted in dropping concussions, frags, and incendiaries on the middle of melee combat and hitting everyone involved.
Rather than focusing demolitions through grenades, it might be a bit more helpful if he used mods like Igniters, Shock Gloves (as he seems to be melee and carbine), Pneumatic Bayonet or Tesla Coil, Extinguishers, and other general gadgetry things befitting his characterization. Basically things that reduce damage to himself and others, without being out of character.
Enid having Injectors and the bandit medic logic might not be amiss either.
