An idea occurred to me a while ago, to do with distinctive skills on player characters.
As it stands, everyone can potentially level everything equally. The only difference is how you spend your points gained from leveling. Some points are better invested than others (but it's an ongoing balance tweeking).
What if there was a number of skills to be picked up front (for example, say 5 - for no particular reason) and all of your other skills leveled at 1/100 of the speed of these. This would certainly increase specialization and diversity, I think.
Just throwing it out there for discussion.

We had this in Beta, it was actually miserable for people because most inevitably regretted the decision they made.

Back in Beta your character can choose a "Martial Focus", "Defensive Focus", and "Utility Focus" which boosted skill EXP gain in their respective fields, though I'm not sure if it imposed a penalty on the others not covered. As DS said, it proved to be rather unpopular and made it difficult for people to change their mind once they've made a choice of focus.
