Been away for a bit, but seeing as I left off where I was peeking into the pyramid, I remembered that:
The general pyramid desert zone needs a shortcut back to Newport or close by. Perhaps located just before the pyramid door.
There are at least three major/side excursions (Pyramid, Underwater zone, crypt) and these adventures are after having progressed through 6-7 significant zones on the way (two of which are very dangerous).
All of which will be repopulated by the time of the return voyage. So similar to the beetle/troll/ice cave/dweller adventure....I think this area also warrants a middle shortcut back. Double duty is way too taxing on ammo and time. Otherwise I suppose you can just commit suicide for a short way out but...? :\
Edit: or better yet - a Save Point in addition to the shortcut back; this makes more sense due to the further 3+ branching excursions possible in that area.

The Pyramid areas haven't been worked on much because we don't have any PCs at the level where they'd need to use those areas for XP/loot. Currently working on a 70-80 zone and there's one big 80-90 one already in. 90-100 and 100+ won't get too much development time until after that.
That said, there's a plan for a camp that includes a save point (rest spot that lets you save XP progress and stash items) in the same area as the pyramid. I could consider adding a hidden path back from that area that leads to the sand pit, as long as it was one way.

Exactly.
But with regards to the level:
A very level-appropriate area (Mines ~60+? ... for some current PCs) naturally exits to that general area. So while PCs may not be successfully going in the 100s locations, they very well might just make it to that particular spot if they are careful ...which means it can't hurt to stick in a save and return path long before you get those 100s fully fleshed out. Simply as part of the Through-The-Mine adventure.
It's true that it is a very difficult challenge going out the back door - if you don't return quickly enough or you actually get to the pyramid desert and want to come back. Eventually I got to the Pyramid area by fighting or guile...and most certainly with full respawns awaiting by the return time (Given enough available time and mood for suicidal exploration).
Which reminds me, iirc the mines had one or 2 metal nodes but no general loot nodes at all. I ran it for a bit of hunting xp for the particular beasties; it's very slow going...and very dangerous - so it might deserve a general node or two.

I'll toss in a save point and exit next update.
