Feel like it should be removed, or changed to a penalty to spotting stealth enemies instead.
Reason being is as it stands, for non-ranged characters it's more worthwhile to have like, a spare level 1 padded helm that you just switch to when you're searching for loot then have the mod integrated into your active armor.

It needs a serious combat debuff if it's going to have +1 AB for ranged attacks. I could make the -1 dodge occur only in situations where you get the +1 AB though.

That actually sounds completely fair.
Mostly make the suggestion because the search mod is a useful alternative to the gas mask to have for a melee character, but not worth it with the dodge penalty.

Honestly I feel like the +1 should apply to spotting stealthed ennemies only, and just giving a general +1 Search to all characters. Otherwise it will still be optimal to carry around a monocle helmet with you keeping it rank 1 and switching it every time you search a room which is just tedious and annoying.

Not really. Only way that'd be the case would be with specific dungeons where certain mods are required, like the Mine in the Wards. Otherwise, if you're only suffering the -1 dodge when using a ranged weapon, only people who mainly use ranged weapons would care. Otherwise, Stabby McSword can rock her helmet with a monocle on it and go sword and board, or big-fuck-off axe, or twin hammers, or whatever without worrying about being easier to hit, so long as it's melee and not ranged stuff they're doing, if I'm reading what PE said right. And as to the ranged characters caring, I care quite a bit, since it's one of the things that increases my AB, so my dodge being lower, I feel, is a fair trade. And while most of the time, I won't need to worry about it, any trip to the desert or anywhere with wyverns I'll really feel it. And I'd still say it's worth it to have it. So, I'd say the situational penalty for the situational bonus is completely and utterly fair.
