There has, at times, been various gripes on Discord about 'Crafting being hard to level, because you need to do it primarily through deconstruction, with rare PC commissions if you are at the top'.
While I don't entirely agree with some of the angles that have been brought up, it is true that much of the crafting XP progression occurs by eating the loot you have, which has a very different feel from ranking up your skill by being productive. (Better by Practice VS Better by Sacrifice)
Partially to address this, and partially as the result of some banter with Fuzz , I would like to suggest that a system could be implemented similar to the current Bounty system, wherein an NPC or 'Commissions Board' offers infrequent 'quests' to PCs in possession of crafting feats, to make an article within their skill range of the appropriate skill (breaking it down into 5 tiers - one for each rank of craft feat), possibly with randomized modules (so a 'randomized loot' with rank between the craft skill and 10-15 ranks lower to match) which would encourage finding other PCs possibly to help with it.
To prevent PCs from simply going out and buying it, or from using conveniently found loot, a trigger could be set to grant a token when the PC with the quest crafts the matching item, like a 'Certificate of Authenticity' or some such similar to Bounty heads, that can be turned in with the item to receive compensation for the work - suggestions being the cost of the item plus a little bit, skill XP, or BXP.
Obviously, I would advise against having these available to everyone all the time - particularly if the effort is fully compensated, hence limitations: using the craft-feats as breakpoints, infrequent availability, etc.
The second part of my suggestion is somewhat separate, but linked. In the same conversation, we discussed the possibility for a sort of 'Showroom' for the craft-hall, where people could show off what they have made, but there is the problem of displaying stats for items, and appearances and whatnot. My own suggestion there was having an Arena-like listing of best completed commissions-quests in a ranked basis, taking into account different tiers and craft skills.
I figure that this could be represented in-game through either actual displayed items, or a display of "Master-works" with an examine text, similar to the initial purpose of Master-Works that a journeyman would present to their guild to show that they were fully capable of tenting to their craft individually and therefore suited for taking on a business on their own.
*:I use the term 'Tier' to refer to the group of skills between one rank divisible by 20 and the next, as in: 0-20, 20-40, etc. as defined by the ranks covered by the crafting abilities.
