Flared Barrel = 25%more spread, 25% less range, KD
Barrel Choke = 25%less spread, 25% more range, wounding
Wounding and KD function ok.
However range variation does not function. The maximum firing distances are identical for both flared and choke.
It is difficult to definitively comment on spread, as it is not readily apparent. It does seem that there is little difference at distance for the smaller spread of Choke vs Flared, based on damage. Using fire pellets for observation of hits.

The ability always fires at the same range, but the pellets will go further with a range increase.

Ok. I think I understand the shotgun mechanic now. This is apparently the case for all shotgun ammunition, as well. I tested a variety of ammo and the various barrel mods/unmodded at a consistent maximum distance on single targets.
So, since the effect can not be targeted on the ground, the only way to benefit from the increased range is to have targets behind the current target. In a sense it is a penetration/AoE-like effect. For example, the extended range of Hunting shells will only be seen on targets past the initial target range.
I'll assume the angle/spread to the target is impactful for the number of potential hits at a distance. Although, I couldn't really make much of the numbers as the damage window is fairly broad... it did seem fairly similar for damage, though. I expect the effect of the angle might be more apparent with mobs between the firer and the target at range.

The damage is partially split up per pellet, IIRC, with the number of pellets that hit contribute non-linearly such that earlier pellets having a higher effect: Two pellets will not deal double the damage, for example. The spread makes a difference as to how many pellets hit a given target at a given range, since they are actually calculated roughly ray-trace and factored against target-size. This means that the damage seen by a spread on many targets will usually add up to more net damage than all pellets on one target, with range being the limitation on how far away a object can be to be included as a potential target.
As a result, the shotgun is very much a weapon that requires conscious positioning for optimal use, and generally better against a multiple targets at a range appropriate to the shell you are using, but can be useful as an above-average burst against a single close target.
