Crafting guns is really costly, and the price of ammunitions that come with these guns are nothing to scoff at. Since I'm spending a lot of cash on ammo, I figured that for the same price for which I can buy it in the store, I'd rather further my Gunsmithing carrier. An iron ingot costs 9.5 for me, while a Carbine magazine costs around 16.0. If we factor in creation costs, then 1 ingot + creation cost would net us around the same price, perhaps a bit cheaper, or a bit more expensive, what matters is that it would be around the same price and I'd be able to advance my Gunsmithing profession bit by bit, since I'd have to restock anyway, might as well make my own.
EDIT: The bullet prices seem to have changed, but I'm sure that with tweaking on how many bullets we can get from crafting per iron ingot we could adjust the pricing to something that's worthwhile.

The bullets actually seem relatively cheap to afford once you get some manner of equipped with other gear. What I'd like to see is the weight on bullets come down about 20%, from 15lbs per 50 to 12lbs per 50. They'd still be heavy, and you'd still have to think about just how many you're willing to cart with you, but it would be a little quality of of life improvement for gunners that are trying to specialize in the skill.

When I stock up on a lot of them, knowing that at least half of the bullets miss their target, I usually end up spending around 100.0. That's a 100.0 I'd rather spend on Crafting, and it would make sense to me that a Gunsmith could also provide bullets to his guns. If not that, I'd be even fine if it fell under Engineering which has nothing at the moment, apart from Crossbows.

I like the Engineering idea.

I've previously suggested via IRC that Engineering be allowed to make grenades, and Gunsmiths be able to create ammunition, in order to provide these professions with something to craft and level up with that is actually useful rather than spamming full-on weapons all the time. However, this was turned down as there is apparently either a guideline or requirement that things in the crafting menu should be items with a scaling item level.

Surprised ammunition and magazines are not craftable.

I was pretty sure Explosives (traps included) would fall under Engineering, and since Engineering is already working with contraptions and gun powder, it might make sense to categorize ammunition under Engineering. Having said that, I would love it if we could craft our own ammunitions as Gunsmiths.
Well, Explosives will probably be craftable because they can scale in damage etc., and with mods like shorter fuses to let them explode faster it would only make sense to exist.
On the otherhand, I can see why ammunition might be a bit of a problem here, as ammunition is nothing more than the "battery" for firing guns, and doesn't help with the damage at all. I still think we could get around the problem somehow.

Or alchemy? Explosives is as much chemistry as engineering, if not more.

Well a lot of things can fall under a lot of professions, that's why I first proposed that ammunition should be more relevant to Gunsmithing than anything else, in the view that guns need ammunition.
Explosives could very well go to Alchemy, as creating gunpowder etc., would fall under that, but the contraptions themselves (the safety of the grenade and the like) are works of Engineering.
I would love to see something like this:
1. To create Explosives you need gunpowder. Alchemist Crafts gunpowder. 2. Engineer buys the gunpowder and goes on to create the Explosive itself. 3. A more complex Crafting system is born.

That would be pretty neat indeed.
