This is an entirely long-reach suggestion, I realize, nothing that could be implemented any time soon, but I thought I would throw it out there anyway!
There have been many games now that simulate animal companions in battle, from DnD's unrealistic panther / spider / wombat companions, to the Dragon Age's mobari warhounds, to the more attempted realistic portrayal of war hounds in the Total War games. Dogs have served a military roll for decades, from the ancient portrayal of gnawing on the other sides soldiers..... to the detection / combat dogs serving in our armed forces today.
How possible would it be for animal companions to make a return..... in the form of purchaseable war dogs?
Perhaps 3 breeds, each focusing on a different melee stat between Str, Dex and Con.
With their own ability tree, focused on giving your companions extra stats and/or attacks / abilities through training?
Just a rough idea, throwing the concept out there, but I though it would be pretty awesome if it's possible.
